Pins with history – Circle of university fraternities

There are always differences between neighbouring countries, which can especially be noticed when somebody lives in a region bordering Switzerland. Not only are the spoken word and the form of democracy different, but the currencies must also be exchanged if somebody decides to treat themselves to a delicious piece of chocolate of the other side of the border. But what about similarities?

If somebody takes a closer look at the tradition of student movements, they will notice many similarities between Germany and Switzerland. One explanation is that many Swiss students have attended German universities until the early 19th century because of the large number of educational facilities in Germany. The custom of student movements was therefore also established in Switzerland.

Origin of the circle

When it comes to the design of their coats of arms, this common origin or all student movements is very recognisable: they are mostly kept in three colours with their so-called circle in the middle. This circle is a symbol made of intertwined letters – a sort of monogram that serves as a sign of identification for the student fraternity. The first letter often used as a connection are these squiggly symbols, and the maxim is included in Latin. For example: Vivat! Crescat! Floreat! – It lives, grows and blooms!

Manufacturing of pins in the shape of coats of arms

Our tradition-conscious neighbouring country continues the tradition and it is therefore natural that pins stamped with coats of arms as described previously are often ordered. They are almost exclusively produced as hard enamel pins with different metal finishing and often do not exceed a size of 15mm. For the circle’s motif, manufacturing methods depend on the client. For some, the monogram is stamped in the same metal as the borders, for others, the circle is printed separately in another colour onto the coats of arms.

Strengthen regionality with statement pins

There is no standardised definition of regionality, and the concept can be very differently understood locally between German federal states (Bundesländer).
